When immersed in a foreign place where you can't speak the language, it can feel overwhelming and easily discouraging. Dialogue is a translation app designed to be a fun, light-hearted, encouraging experience that takes you through the language learning curve manageable and whimsical. The design system is built to include positive, inclusive language, visual breaks, and friendly suggestions. The app product extended into a print product: a pocket-sized accordion that serves as a personal reference when traveling to foreign places. The accordion unfolds visuals that express the experience of learning a new language. The accordion itself is an interactive product that mirrors the back and forth motions of being lost in translation.

It all started with quotation marks. To visualize the broken communication experience, I overlapped quotation marks with their duplicates colored in white. Overlapping them not only created gaps in the dialogues, but it also created interesting shapes to play with. I then played with their sharpening. Depending on how clear the communication is, the clarity of the shapes changes accordingly. 

Those shapes became the building blocks for other compositions that describe the ups and downs of getting lost in the communication gap.

After downloading the app, one can order the Dialogue Travel Kit if they are planning to travel to a foreign environment. The Travel Kit includes a pocket-sized accordion and a travel bag. Everything about Dialogue empowers and encourages someone learning a new language through a vibrant and energizing design system.
